Deposit type & geology

Laramide copper-tourmaline hydrothermal veins.

Lordsburg granodiorite stock and adjacent Late Cretaceous andesite/basalt flows.

Age: Laramide, ~75–55 Ma.

Structural geology & terrain

Vein/structure orientation: NE-striking en echelon fault/vein system; Emerald Vein (principal producer, >4,000 ft strike length, ~2,000 ft depth) and Atwood Vein (E-trending); Waldo Mine E-W/85°S

Named controlling structure: Emerald Vein / Atwood Vein serve as the structures themselves — no separate named through-going fault identified

Elevation range: 4,459–5,000 ft; peak 6,002 ft

Pyramid Mountains, Chihuahuan desert scrub grading to sky-island oak/juniper/pine higher up; extreme summer heat.

High-resolution terrain

High-resolution lidar hillshade of the Lordsburg district

~6 m/pixel lidar-derived hillshade (USGS 3DEP) — fine enough to reveal old mine workings, waste-rock piles, trenches, and roads the statewide terrain layer can’t show.

Historical production

Two non-reconciled figures: 157,000 oz Au + 6.7M oz Ag, 1904–61 (Elston 1965/NMGS Guidebook 16)

Sources: Elston 1965/NMGS Guidebook 16 researched — see sources

223,750 oz Au reported / 225,000 oz est. all-time + 6.19M oz Ag (NMBGMR Resource Map 15)

Sources: NMBGMR Resource Map 15 researched — see sources

Current status

Active exploration. American Copper Development Corp controls ~18,700 acres (100 patented claims) adjacent to Rio Tinto holdings; 117 surface drill holes completed to date, recent intercepts up to 15% Cu with associated precious metals. EMNRD exploration permit HI022EM (copper + gold), renewed through April 2025.

Renewed interest (1–3 yrs ago)

American Copper Development Corp filed its second renewal (R2) of EMNRD exploration permit HI022EM.

Land ownership & directions

Mixed ownership

The district spans more than one ownership type (e.g., patented claims inside BLM or National Forest land) — check the specific parcel, not just the district, before assuming access.

Mix of patented claims and BLM land, Pyramid Mountains. ~3–8 mi S of Lordsburg via local roads off I-10.

See specimen photos (mindat.org) → — this app doesn’t host specimen photos itself; this searches mindat.org’s own mineral-specimen database, which isn’t necessarily specific to this exact district.

This pin is a generalized district/historic-site reference point, not a surveyed claim boundary — routes may cross private or patented inholdings where public access isn’t guaranteed even if a road reaches the site. Backcountry mine areas commonly have unmarked shafts, unstable ground, and no cell service; confirm current access and safety conditions (land manager, county, or landowner) before heading out.

Tailings reprocessing potential

Higher tailings potential

Copper accounted for roughly 75% of historic value versus about 10% each for gold and silver; century-old, copper-focused milling of a zoned polymetallic vein system is a classic under-recovered-byproduct-gold profile.

This is a documentary heuristic, not assay data. The tier above is inferred from historic production era, processing method, and ore character already cited elsewhere on this page — nobody has sampled or assayed this district’s tailings as part of this research. Actual recoverable gold content can only be established by physical sampling.

Reprocessing tailings is regulated mining. Disturbing or reprocessing historic mill waste requires the same NM Mining Act permitting as new mining (see the regulatory companion guide), regardless of who currently holds the claim or surface rights — and ownership of the tailings material itself is a separate legal question from mineral rights on the underlying land.

Legacy tailings can be hazardous. Pre-modern processing commonly used mercury (amalgamation) or cyanide (heap leach), and can carry elevated arsenic and other heavy metals — not a casual sampling target, and disturbing contaminated material can carry real environmental liability.

Geologist’s read

A classic zoned Laramide vein system — a tourmaline-bearing, gold-silver-enriched core near the stock's apex grading outward through chalcopyrite-specularite to lead-zinc — which is exactly the kind of zonation a modern drill program uses to vector toward the highest-grade historic ore shoots.

Historical news mentions

Period newspaper mentions from the Library of Congress’s Chronicling America archive — supplementary color on a district’s activity over time, not a research signal or evidence of gold potential. Matched by place name, not manually verified per item.
